Fishing Grey Reef

Fishing grey reef will give you the opportunity to catch a trout over 20 inches long just a few hours north of Fort Collins. Fishing from the shore or from a boat there are big fish a plenty.

Grey Reef is a section of the North Platte river that starts at Alcova reservoir and continues to Casper, Wyoming. The best way to fish it is from a drift boat, but there are some public accesses and some wade fishing available as well. Some of the best fishing we had on the trip was wading and casting dry flies to rising trout. We had a lot of luck with Flashback Pheasant Tails in the deep runs and a few on streamers. This water is also know for great hopper hatches but we missed it by a few weeks.

The river has a mix of public and private land. Private means you can not drop anchor or go ashore and they are serious about it. Check out the floaters guide of Grey Reef to see what the posted signs look like. It was hard to see them and as we floated we never knew if it was ok to land.

The Reef Fly Shop is located off Grey Reef road on the way to the boat launch. The shop has a lot of patterns and offers guided trips, drift boat rentals and shuttle services. You can check the river conditions, hatches and lodging information on their website ww.northplatteflyfishing.com

The first pullout is 7 river miles down stream and is the Lusby public fishing area. This area is an easy pullout and has a little area to keep on fishing. Each time we got there the Wyoming wind picked up and made it unfishable but the thought was there. Fishing from a boat was very relaxing and gave me a whole new perspective on the river. If you have never done it before I would highly recommend it. Instead of doing a guided trip you can also rent a boat. We fished well into the evening both days we were on the river, the nice part about having your own boat.

Both the shop and the general store have rentals and shuttle services. I will get prices up so check back soon. You can also see more pictures from this trip on the NoCo Facebook page.
